Observe from a safe place
What to document
after a storm.
A photo and a short description can help start an inspection request. They cannot confirm the roof’s overall condition or rule out hidden damage.
Stay on the ground
Follow local emergency guidance. Keep away from downed lines, hanging branches, unstable structures, and floodwater. Do not climb onto the roof or enter a damaged area to get a photograph.
Describe what changed
- Missing or displaced shingles, tiles, or metal components visible from a safe location.
- Debris or a fallen branch affecting the building.
- New interior stains or water entry in an otherwise safe, accessible area.
- A change in gutters, roof edges, or visible flashing.
Give the observation a location
Include the property address, room or side of the building, approximate time first noticed, and whether the concern is ongoing. Photograph a wider view and a closer view only where you can do so safely.
Let the inspection establish the next step
A roof that appears unchanged from the ground may still need assessment. An inspection records accessible conditions and limits; proposed repairs should follow the findings. For coverage or claim questions, contact your insurer or licensed representative.
